Young, Educated and Unemployed: Keeping College Graduates from Becoming a Lost Generation
WASHINGTON, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will hold a Roundtable entitled "Young, Educated and Unemployed: Keeping College Graduates from Becoming a Lost Generation" on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at Busboys & Poets, 2021 14th Street NW. Experts and recent graduates will weigh-in on their experiences in today's tough job market, which threatens to shut out a generation of educated young people, and what is being done about it.
"Perhaps the most innocent victim of today's deep recession are recent graduates, who have heard all their young lives that a college degree is the golden ticket to a job," Norton said. "These young people were encouraged to go to school and incur steep student loans with the promise of career options and significant earning potential upon graduation." The Roundtable will unbundle recent graduates from the many Americans of every age and background to reveal who these young people are, the specifics of their job search, and how they are coping. Experts and recent graduates themselves will speak to what it means to graduate during a recession, and what they are doing about it.
The current unemployment rate of Americans between the ages of 16 to 24 is 19.1 percent, higher than the national average.
Among the experts to appear are Tony Pugh, an award-winning journalist who covers economic news, and Katherine Stahl, Executive Director of American University's Career Center. In addition, recent college graduates and audience members will be allowed to testify on the employment challenges they face in a poor performing economy.
