WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), tomorrow, Wednesday, March 31, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Verizon Center Practice Gym, 601 F Street, NW,will present Washington Mystics owner Sheila Johnson with a congressional commemoration recognizing her as a career model for women, and for her leadership in business, sports, and entertainment at a Young Women's Basketball Clinic, conducted by the Washington Mystics' Alana Beard, Marissa Coleman, and the newly signed all-star and two-time champion guard Katie Smith. Mystics players Beard and Coleman will offer tips for success on the court and in life to young women selected from basketball teams at Coolidge, Dunbar, McKinley Tech, and H.D. Woodson. "Sheila Johnson's list of firsts has already made her an historic figure in areas of American life where women and African Americans are sparsely represented," Norton said. "No woman in American history has simultaneously cracked open so many super-charged, male-dominated fields."

Sheila Johnson became the first African American woman to have ownership in three professional sports franchises: the Washington Mystics, the Washington Wizards, and the Washington Capitals. She also became the first African American woman to purchase a major, luxury golf resort, the Salamander Golf and Spa Resort, a 72-hole resort in Innisbrook, FL, which hosts the PGA Tour's Transition championships and the LGPA Legends Tour's Open Championship. "I am grateful that Sheila Johnson, Alana Beard, and Marissa Coleman are allowing us to highlight their unusual achievements that give special meaning to Women's History Month in the District of Columbia."
