Time Change to Bring Norton to the National Mall Monday to Focus on Safety

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With the end of daylight saving time Sunday, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will address public safety concerns by walking on the National Mall on Monday, November 5, 2012, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Ever since six muggings occurred on the Mall in a matter of weeks in 2006, Norton has walked the Mall to examine police presence, lighting, and other safety measures. The Mall is a favorite destination for tourists, who support D.C.'s economy.

"The National Mall is one of the safest places in the District. It has remained essentially crime-free since police quickly captured the criminals in 2006, and we intend to keep it that way," Norton said. "Dark parks with few police officers invite trouble. Early nightfall after daylight saving time ends will still see many runners and walkers on the Mall. We continue to pay particular attention to lighting on the Mall, in the same way our office is addressing lighting problems in Fort Totten Park in Northeast. Tourists and residents alike use the Mall at virtually all hours, and they deserve a worry-free visit to one of the centerpieces of the District."
