Underemployed, Part-Time, and Unemployed Workers to Participate in Norton’s Roundtable, Tonight

October 29, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's (D-DC) roundtable, "An Urgent Mission: Finding Jobs for Unemployed D.C. Residents," tonight will feature a unique discussion on not only unemployed workers, but on employed District of Columbia residents who are earning thousands of dollars less than they did before the Great Recession; on formerly full-time employees, working part-time for the first time; and on others for whom the Great Recession has left them with a new definition of employment or, worse, unemployed. The District of Columbia has a 7.6 percent unemployment rate, down from 11.9 percent in December 2009, the height of the recession, but the national unemployment rate is 5.9 percent. Norton said residents are still bearing the brunt of the Great Recession, even though the economy is on the rise, as reports show 52 straight months of private sector job growth and more than 2.4 million jobs added in the past twelve months alone. This will be Norton's last roundtable of the 113th Congress, and will feature unemployment experts and focus on residents who will share their personal stories about taking the brunt of the Great Recession, often being left unemployed or underemployed. The discussion will also touch on those who went to college looking for a job, only to become young victims of the Great Recession.

Residents are encouraged to attend the roundtable to share their stories or simply to learn what can be done about today's unemployment and underemployment climate.
