Norton to Meet with U.S. Park Police on the Trinidad Shooting in Northeast
June 22, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that she will meet on July 22 with United States Park Police Chief Salvatore Lauro concerning the shooting of Trey Joyner on June 8 in the Trinidad neighborhood. According to reports, the shooting involved U.S. Park Police who are part of the "Safe Streets Task Force," which consists of two federal agencies, FBI, U.S. Park Police along with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Norton said the Park Police and other federal agencies have been instrumental in helping to reduce crime in the city but that the shooting raises legitimate questions for the local community and the District. "The Park Police are the only federal police force with jurisdiction to patrol throughout the District. Notwithstanding the federal assistance, this incident should alert all concerned of the necessity to build relationships and foster more regular communication between federal police, who regularly work alongside the Metropolitan Police Department," the Congresswoman said.
