Utah Passes the Baton to Congress to Pass Voting Rights Bill this Week
December 4, 2006
Washington, DC—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will kick off the “DC Vote Congress Day” in support of the House vote bill at 9:00 tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at the United Methodist Building located at 100 Maryland Ave, NE. Norton’s office released the following statement in response to today’s Utah passage of a redistricting map that was required for consideration of the Davis-Norton D.C.-Utah House vote bill:
“The magnificent two-thirds vote by the Utah legislature sends the strongest message to Congress to pass the Utah-D.C. vote bill this week. Utah was compelled to do some very heavy lifting but they never flinched. They met the unexpected redistricting requirement with remarkable speed. Utah also put an exclamation point behind its vote by passing its redistricting map by a two-thirds margin rather than the simple majority vote required. Utah has shown that the state wants this vote this week as much as D.C. does. My Republican and Democratic congressional allies and D.C. residents alike are further energized to do what it takes as Utah passes the baton to us to run this race to the finish line and pass this bill before Congress adjourns this week.”
