WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that the Committee on Oversight and Reform (COR) yesterday passed her bill that would require the Commanding General of the District of Columbia National Guard, who is the top official in the D.C National Guard, to live in D.C. The Commanding General is appointed by the president and is a federal official.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today reintroduced her Protecting Federal Agencies and Employees from Political Interference Act, which would require an act of Congress before the headquarters for any federal entity located in the National Capital Region (NCR) may be moved out of the NCR. The bill is cosponsored by Reps. Gwen Moore (D-WI), Jamie Raskin (D-MD), David Trone (D-MD), and Anthony Brown (D-MD).

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After the Senate today confirmed the first local District of Columbia judge this Congress, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) called on Congress to pass her bill to eliminate the Senate confirmation requirement for local D.C. judges. The local D.C. courts are facing an unprecedented vacancy crisis, which is harming public safety and access to justice, because Republicans had prevented the Senate from confirming any local D.C. court nominees this Congress until Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) filed cloture on seven local D.C. judges last month. The Senate is expected to confirm six additional local D.C. judges this week.

D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), chair of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, announced the subcommittee will hold a hearing, titled “The Road Ahead for Automated Vehicles,” on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.  The hearing will examine how the deployment of automated vehicles affects safety, infrastructure, and the commercial driving workforce.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the response she received from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to her January 12, 2022, letter regarding USPS layoffs amid District of Columbia-wide mail delivery problems. In that letter, Norton inquired why such layoffs had occurred.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today introduced the District of Columbia Special Elections Home Rule Act, which would give the District complete authority to set the date of special elections for local offices, as other jurisdictions already have. The bill simply removes a limitation on the District that is not only inconsistent with the self-government authority otherwise granted by the Home Rule Act, but is also counterproductive. This bill would strengthen the District’s home-rule authority and does not require statehood.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the federal tax filing season kicks off today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) reminded the American public that the District of Columbia pays more federal taxes per capita than any state and more federal taxes overall than 21 states, but that D.C. residents do not have the voting representation in Congress or the full local self-government accorded to residents of the 50 states. Norton said that the remedy is for the Senate to pass her House-passed D.C. statehood bill.
