WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a statement today following a briefing to the full House by Trump security officials on the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

“Members of Congress went to a congressional briefing to hear why President Trump ordered the unprecedented killing of a major government official, Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.  What we got was a recitation of Soleimani’s well-known record of bad acts.  Left unanswered were the precipitating acts by Iran that justified targeting this major official, whose killing was turned down by past Republican and Democratic presidents; whether and how the U.S. is safer following the killing, considering that thousands more troops have been deployed since Soleimani was killed and security in the Middle East and the U.S. has been stepped up; and what, if any, further attacks by Iran were thought to be planned at the time Soleimani was killed.”
