Norton Looking Forward to Interview with ‘Nemesis’ Stephen Colbert Tomorrow
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said today that she is looking forward to her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tomorrow, Tuesday July 13, particularly now that the House has passed her District of Columbia. statehood bill twice. Colbert first interviewed Norton in 2006 for his “Better Know A District” segment on his Comedy Central show, “The Colbert Report,” teasing her for not being able to cast a vote on the House floor. Their banter, at times contentious but always in the spirit of comedy, helped grow national awareness for D.C.’s lack of voting representation in Congress. Colbert has interviewed Norton several times since.
“Colbert has been a gift he had no intention of giving to the District of Columbia,” Norton said. “Of course, it was a gift at our expense, which we accepted for a reason. A great frustration for D.C. residents has been that most Americans assume that D.C. residents have the same rights as other Americans, and by making fun of D.C. and me, Colbert helped elevate the issue in the national consciousness. Now that the House has passed the D.C. statehood bill twice and we have a President who supports the bill, what will Colbert make fun of? We will all see tomorrow evening.”
