Norton Releases Questions from Today’s Oversight Hearing on Election ‘Audit’ in Arizona and Threats to U.S. Democracy

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released her question line from today’s Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on the flawed election audit conducted in Arizona. Norton questioned Jack Sellers and William Gates, Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, of the Board of Supervisors of Maricopa County, Arizona.

Norton’s questions to the Republican supervisors of Arizona’s election show the extremes that former President Trump and those who follow him were willing to go to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The questions, as prepared for delivery, follow.

Threats to Election Officials

Chairman Sellers, Supervisor Gates, thank you for appearing before the Committee today.

Since the 2020 election you and the members of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors have been the targets of horrific threats of violence.

I understand that the conspiracy theories produced by this audit have dramatically increased those threats.

I’d like to ask each of you about the threats you have received.

Q:        Chairman Sellers, approximately how many threats have you and your family received since November 2020?

Q:        How have these threats affected you and your family?

Supervisor Gates:

Q:        Can you please describe some of the threats you and your family have received?

Q:        Is it your understanding that the people making these threats support the Big Lie that the election was stolen from President Trump?

Q:        Chairman Sellers, do you agree with that assessment?

Q:        Have other supervisors and employees of the county been targeted by similar threats?

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us today.

I was horrified to learn that supporters of former President Trump and of the Cyber Ninjas audit erected a guillotine outside the Arizona statehouse.

Mr. Gates, you have been a county supervisor since 2016.

Q:        Have you ever experienced this level of threats and attacks before the 2020 election?

Q:        Do you think Trump’s Big Lie contributed to the level of vitriol, anger, and misinformation?

Election officials across the country have faced unprecedented threats in the past year simply for doing their jobs.

And it’s clear Cyber Ninjas’ audit has fueled the misinformation that has put these public servants at risk.

We should all condemn individuals who threaten the safety of elected officials.

But we also need to be real with the American people about who’s really behind this:  former President Trump and his Big Lie of election fraud.
