Norton Seeking DC Students to Be House Page in the Fall (6/2/09)
Norton Seeking D.C. Students to Apply to Be House Pages in Fall
June 2, 2009
Washington, D.C. - The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that she will name another D.C. student to serve as a congressional page in the 2009 Fall Page Program. The D.C. page will enroll for one semester in the page school, while working on the Hill, and receiving a stipend. Applications are due no later than Friday, June 19. Qualified applicants must be at least 16 years of age prior to the start of the program on August 30, must be a junior in high school, must be a citizen of the United States, and must have a 3.0 GPA in core subjects.
Norton said, "I reach out for extra opportunities whenever they pop up, and I am delighted to have this one so soon after the appointment of Ashley Pierce of Cardozo High School, who served in the spring 2008 semester. Pages are often on the floor, where historic debates occur and become eyewitnesses to history. At the same time they get a first-class education for the semester. For D.C. students, whose hometown is the nation's capital, serving as pages is especially meaningful."
Pages play an important role in Congress, and not only on the floor but also working in the cloak rooms, where they rub elbows with Members, and assist in the preparation for House floor sessions. The students live in the page dorm, go on educational field trips, participate in other activities, and have fun together.
