Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C.—At the request of the 3rd Annual Sandy Hook Ride on Washington (SHROW), Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a Capitol Hill press conference to call on Congress to take sensible actions to reduce gun violence on Tuesday, March 31, at the House Triangle at 2:00 p.m.  Before arriving at the U.S. Capitol, Team 26 will host a local rally at the Faith Presbyterian Church (3161 South Capitol St. SW) at noon, where Congresswoman Norton will offer remarks.

At the Capitol, Norton will be joined by Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Monte Frank, the founder of Team 26, 26 cyclists inspired to action after the 2012 tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, and Patrick Carolan, Executive Director of the Franciscan Action Network.   Team 26 is embarking on March 28 for a four-day, 400 mile bike ride journey, and stopping in cities along the East Coast to honor all victims of gun violence and to call for reasonable action to reduce gun violence in America.

“D.C. residents are pleased to join the incredible activists from Team 26, never forgetting and never letting America forget what happened to our children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School,” Norton said.  “Our city has had its own share of devastating gun violence.  Today the need for sensible gun reform is all too apparent as Congress tries to strip away D.C.’s gun laws, including our ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, making D.C. residents and Team 26 natural allies.”

“Team 26’s ride ends in Washington, and they pass the baton to Congress to remember the tragedy of Sandy Hook by taking action to pass common sense laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and people with severe mental illnesses,” Van Hollen said.  “With their show of endurance, Team 26 sends a strong message to those who stand against efforts to reduce senseless gun violence: we will never forget the lives we tragically lost in Newtown, and we will not rest until we uphold our responsibility to keep all Americans safe.”
