Norton to Rally with Labor Organizations at ‘Working People’s Day of Action,’ Saturday

February 23, 2018

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will rally with labor unions, environmental justice groups and faith-based organizations at a "Working People's Day of Action" on Saturday, February 24, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. – noon, at Freedom Plaza (14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW). The rally occurs as the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear oral arguments next week in Janus v. AFSCME Council 31, which could diminish the strength of labor unions, especially public sector unions, across the nation.

"This upcoming case is a retread in the steady drumbeat by Republicans to stamp out unions in our country," Norton said. "The Supreme Court has already answered the question of whether workers should pay a fee to cover the costs of collective bargaining, from which all workers benefit, whether they are members of the union or not. The union must represent union and nonunion members alike, but the nonunion fee is less than what members pay in union dues. Anti-union activists accept all the benefits, but want union members alone to pay the price of getting them."
