WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the federal tax filing season kicks off today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) issued a statement reminding the public that the District of Columbia pays more federal taxes per capita than any state and more federal taxes overall than 23 states, but that D.C. residents do not have the voting representation in Congress or full local self-government accorded to residents of the 50 states. Norton said that the remedy is for Congress to pass her D.C. statehood bill.

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, and D.C. Council Chair Mendelson will also deliver remarks.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said today she will work to defeat the disapproval resolution introduced by Congressman James Comer (R-KY), and an additional disapproval resolution that Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) announced he will introduce, to prevent a local D.C. bill allowing noncitizen D.C. residents to vote in local elections from taking effect. The D.C. Council passed the bill in October to allow D.C. residents who are not citizens to vote in local elections by a vote of 12-1.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) spoke on the House floor during debate on the rules for the 118th Congress. The rule package passed last night removes the floor privileges of D.C.’s mayor, despite granting governors of states and 16 other categories of people – including foreign ministers – floor privileges.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that she introduced the District of Columbia statehood bill for the 118th Congress today with 165 original cosponsors. The bill passed the House for the first time in history in June of 2020 and passed again in April of 2021.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) urged the National Zoo today to reevaluate its policy requiring visitors to reserve passes ahead of time, saying the policy deters both visits from those without access to a smartphone or the internet and spontaneous visits. In addition, the requirement differs from the standard Smithsonian policy of not requiring passes for entry.

President Biden Renominates Ana Reyes, Norton's Recommendation, for the U.S. District Court for D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that President Biden renominated Norton’s recommendation, Ana Reyes, for the U.S. District Court for D.C. Although Reyes was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee in August, renomination was required because a new Congress convened before Reyes received full Senate confirmation. If confirmed, Reyes will be the first Hispanic woman and first openly LGBTQ person ever to serve on that court. Norton's first two recommendations to Biden for the same court, Jia Cobb and Florence Pan, were confirmed by the Senate and are serving on the bench.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that President Biden signed her Women Who Worked on the Home Front World War II Memorial Act, which would authorize the establishment of a memorial on federal land in the District of Columbia to honor the contributions of the women who kept the home front running during World War II, into law. The bill was included as part of the omnibus appropriations package. The idea for the memorial came from Norton’s constituent Raya Kenney, who has been advocating tirelessly for it for more than a decade. The bill was introduced in the Senate by Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL).
