WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) criticized a bill introduced by Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) that would prohibit new construction, major renovations, and new or renewed leases for the headquarters of federal agencies in the National Capital Region (NCR), with limited exceptions. The bill also would require the General Services Administration to establish a process to consider the relocation of headquarters. The bill is intended to move headquarters out of the NCR.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today warned that Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has become at least the second House Republican this year to say that, if Republicans are in the majority next year, they should repeal the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, which gave D.C. an elected chief executive (mayor) and legislature (Council). In February, Representative Andrew Clyde (R-GA) also said that a Republican House should repeal the Home Rule Act, and he said he was working on a bill to do so, which he has yet to introduce. Several other House Republicans, including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA) and Representative James Comer (KY), the ranking member of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, which has jurisdiction over D.C., have told the press this year that they plan to limit D.C.’s authority to govern its own affairs next Congress.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) wrote the United States Postal Service (USPS) about the increase in mail theft, particularly of checks, through the use of stolen universal keys. Thieves have been using universal keys to steal checks and then change the payees and dollar amounts. Norton requested a response by May 30, 2022, outlining the steps USPS is taking to remedy the problem.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — At a Committee on Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties hearing on curriculum sabotage and classroom censorship tomorrow, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will highlight the unique threat to District of Columbia public schools from Congress’ control over D.C.’s local affairs. Norton warned that a Republican House could try to ban books and regulate curriculum in D.C. public schools. Representative Glenn Grothman (R-WI) has already introduced a bill this Congress that would regulate the teaching of race and gender in D.C. public schools.

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Chair of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) issued the following statement after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released an early estimate of traffic fatalities for 2021. At an estimated 42,915 deaths, the number represents a 16-year high and a 10.5% increase in fatalities from 2020.

The bill is intended to move federal agency headquarters out of the NCR.
