WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, toured the perimeter of the White House today to see for herself whether public access is being safeguarded or if the first target for fixing White House security was the public. Norton toured the perimeter in preparation for tomorrow's Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on security breaches at the White House.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – United States Attorney General Eric Holder called Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today, who first recommended him in 1993 to President Bill Clinton to be United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, to inform her that he will be resigning from his post as Attorney General as soon as a successor is confirmed. Holder, the first African American Attorney General, was also the first African American U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), honorary host of the District of Columbia Commission on Black Men and Boys, announced that the Commission will hold a roundtable, entitled "A Candid Conversation on Gangs and Youth Violence," on Tuesday, September 30, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 at Matthews Memorial Baptist Church, 2616 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE. The Commission is chaired by Isaac Fulwood, chairman of the U.S. Parole Commission and a former District of Columbia police chief.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released a letter Norton sent to the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Stephen T. Ayers, asking for a comprehensive review of working conditions for Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) employees. Earlier this month, staff from the office of the Congresswoman, a former chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, met with CVC workers who complained about the water policy, which makes it harder to stay hydrated throughout the day.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After the District of Columbia Council today approved emergency legislation legalizing the carry of concealed handguns in the District, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said she is prepared to strongly defend the District's new, narrowly tailored law from congressional interference. The District passed the legislation, which would require a carry permit applicant to demonstrate good cause for carrying, in response to a federal district court ruling striking down D.C.'s ban on carrying a gun outside the home. WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the Washington football team prepares to play at Fedex Field on Thursday, the Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that, when the House reconvenes, Norton will introduce legislation to strip the National Football League (NFL) of its tax exempt status as long as it continues to promote the current name of its Washington football team. Norton's bill will be the House companion to Senator Maria Cantwell's (D-WA) bill, which she announced last week at a Change the Mascot campaign press conference.

Norton is concerned about the call for action before an investigation reveals what, if any, action is necessary.
