WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said that she will be one of the recipients of the "Highway Safety Hero" Award, to be presented today, Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 3:30 p.m. at the Sewell/Belmont House on Capitol Hill (144 Constitution Avenue NE). Advocates for Highway & Auto Safety will honor Norton, the ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, for her leadership in advancing truck safety.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the school year in the District of Columbia and across the country ends, bringing thousands of people to Washington to open the summer season, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today reintroduced the United States Commission on an Open Society with Security Act. The Congresswoman's bill addresses the need for balance by establishing a commission of experts from a broad spectrum of disciplines to investigate how to maintain democratic traditions of openness and access while responding adequately to the substantial security threats posed by terrorism.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today thanked the District of Columbia Council for introducing a resolution supporting federal action to rename a street near the Chinese Embassy for a Chinese activist jailed for supporting democracy and a bill symbolically designating a portion of First Street NE/SE between Constitution Avenue NE and Independence Avenue SE as "D.C. No Taxation Without Representation Way." The city has jurisdiction over First Street NE/SE.

Washington, DC -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said the House's draft fiscal year 2015 District of Columbia Appropriations bill, which will be marked up tomorrow, Wednesday, June 18, 2014, by the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, was mostly good news with a couple of exceptions that she thinks she can fix. The bill provides only $20 million for the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant program (DCTAG), a $10 million cut from the fiscal year 2014 enacted level and a $20 million cut from the President's fiscal year 2015 budget request.

Washington, DC—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a regular at "Will on the Hill," has been invited again to appear in Shakespeare Theatre's Will on the Hill, an annual, bipartisan event that blends politics and theater. This year's play, Lend Me Your Ears, written by Peter Byrne and the West Wing Writer's group, will feature performances by members of Congress and special guest performances by Emmy-, Golden Globe-, and Tony- nominated actors, Nicholas Bruder, Harry Hamlin and Hannah Yelland.

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) is pleased to announce Nila Kay Jackson as the first performer for Lunchtime Music on the Mall, which was slated to begin last Tuesday, but was cancelled due to rain. Ms. Jackson is scheduled to perform today, June 17, 2014, from noon-1 p.m. Ms. Jackson, a District of Columbia native, is a songwriter, vocalist and acoustic guitarist who performed in last year's series as well. Her music is a fusion of R&B and rock.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and others on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Special Panel on Public-Private Partnerships (P3 Panel) will travel in New York City on Monday, June 16 for a roundtable policy discussion on private investment in infrastructure using public-private partnerships. In addition to the roundtable, the P3 Panel members will visit sites in the New York City area that have used public-private partnerships for transportation infrastructure.
