WASHINGTON, DC – The Capitol Police Union has asked to meet with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) following the mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, where a Capitol Police tactical team was apparently ordered to stand down. Norton's office will set the meeting in the near future. Norton spoke with Capitol Police officers at the Navy Yard and she understands their frustration that the tactical team was not allowed to proceed.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After House Republicans included a provision defunding Obamacare in their fiscal year 2014 short-term continuing resolution (CR) to keep the federal and District of Columbia governments running after September 30, 2013, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today took several steps to keep the District government open. Norton alerted D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray that, due to the addition of Obamacare defunding, the chances that Congress will pass a CR to keep both the D.C. and federal governments open are significantly reduced.

WASHINGTON, DC – Convinced that the government could shut down on October 1, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will take the first of several steps to keep the District of Columbia government open when she testifies today at the Rules Committee markup of the fiscal year 2014 short-term continuing resolution (CR), on her amendment to authorize the D.C. government to spend its local funds for all of fiscal year 2014, which begins on October 1, and not just until the expiration of the CR (December 15, 2013).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After spending more than a decade trying to get intercity bus service into Union Station, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today joyfully cut the ribbon on the new Union Station bus deck. In 2010, Norton's efforts resulted in the first intercity bus service at Union Station.

WASHINGTON, DC – The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released Norton's letter to President Obama urging him to form an independent panel to investigate the many security issues raised by the mass shooting inside the secure facility at the Washington Navy Yard yesterday. She recommends the panel be comprised not only of law enforcement, intelligence, military and security experts, but also experts from such disciplines as technology, psychology, and city and land use planning.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will hold a moment of silence on the floor of the House of Representatives tomorrow, Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at about 7:00 p.m., in memory of those who lost their lives during today's Navy Yard shooting. She will be at the next briefing by Mayor Vincent Gray at 4 p.m. at 4th and I Street SE.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said that she was encouraged that National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell appears to be shifting his position regarding the disparaging nature of the name "Redskins." After defending the team name in a letter to Norton and other members of Congress in June as "distinct from any disparagement that could be viewed in some other context," Goodell, in an interview with 106.7 The Fan in D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today had staff call the U.S. Park Police after learning that Concepcion Picciotto's peace vigil was removed from its location in front of the White House last night. Following the call from Norton's office, the Park Police agreed to the return of the vigil, and Picciotto was informed where it had been taken and how to get access to get it, and supporters have taken her to retrieve her belongings.
