WASHINGTON, D.C. — At a Committee on Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties hearing on curriculum sabotage and classroom censorship tomorrow, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will highlight the unique threat to District of Columbia public schools from Congress’ control over D.C.’s local affairs. Norton warned that a Republican House could try to ban books and regulate curriculum in D.C. public schools. Representative Glenn Grothman (R-WI) has already introduced a bill this Congress that would regulate the teaching of race and gender in D.C. public schools.

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Chair of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) issued the following statement after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released an early estimate of traffic fatalities for 2021. At an estimated 42,915 deaths, the number represents a 16-year high and a 10.5% increase in fatalities from 2020.  

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) criticized a bill introduced by Congressman Bill Johnson (R-OH) that would prohibit, with limited exceptions, new construction, major renovations, and new or renewed leases for the headquarters of any federal agency that is located in the National Capital Region (NCR). The bill is intended to move federal agency headquarters out of the NCR.

​​​​​​​WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that, at her request, the House’s Water Resources Development Act of 2022 (WRDA), released yesterday, authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct studies on a secondary drinking water source for the District of Columbia, swimming in the Potomac and Anacostia rivers in D.C., and flooding in the Federal Triangle area of D.C. The Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will mark up the bill at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced the 15 District of Columbia community project funding requests that she submitted for the fiscal year 2023 appropriations bills. Norton received 39 requests. Members of the House were allowed to submit up to 15 requests, and the Committee on Appropriations established narrow criteria for eligible projects. Norton regrets that she could not submit many worthy projects. Community project funding was formerly known as earmarks.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the response she received from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to her April 28, 2022, letter about undelivered and delayed mail throughout the District of Columbia and her office’s difficulty in receiving timely responses from USPS. In its response, USPS apologized for the delays in responding to her office and said D.C. postal officials recently implemented new procedures to avoid future delays in responding, including a new platform to track congressional inquiries. The response also noted that USPS in D.C. recently made a push to substantially reduce the number of outstanding congressional cases, bringing them nearly current.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), co-chair of the Quiet Skies Caucus and a member of the Subcommittee on Aviation, today announced that she will introduce a bill that would require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to submit recommendations to Congress on how to reduce helicopter noise in the District of Columbia. This will be the third bill Norton has introduced this Congress to combat helicopter noise in D.C.
