WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released the following statement today after District of Columbia voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum that advises the D.C. Council to petition Congress for statehood.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—After receiving a report that some District of Columbia residents at Hope Village Residential Reentry Center had been denied permission to vote in today’s election, the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) placed a call to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), which has jurisdiction over federal halfway houses, including those in the District, to clear up what appeared to be confusion about who is eligible to register and vote in D.C.

A vendor at MetLife Stadium at a September game between the New York Giants and the Washington football team did not recognize a D.C. resident’s driver’s license, the new version of which lists “District of Columbia” rather than “Washington, D.C.,” and refused to sell alcohol to the resident.
