WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the following statement on the death of Washington Post columnist William Raspberry.

"American journalism has lost one of its sages, but the District of Columbia has lost much more with the passing of Bill Raspberry. Bill wrote about the world and about life, but he also often wrote about the city he called home. Bill Raspberry loved this city, but he never coddled us. He managed to make us listen even when we did not want to hear.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said that she was pleased at today's hearing on the Height Act when Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) invited her to join him in a colloquy about giving the District of Columbia greater authority to decide Height Act matters for itself. "Not unlike Chairman Issa's announcement at the end of his hearing on the D.C. budget last year that he supported D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) met with the press outside the House Judiciary Committee hearing room following the committee's markup and passage of H.R. 3803, the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, a bill banning abortions in the District of Columbia after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The Congresswoman expressed her gratitude to the Democrats on the Committee, all of whom opposed the bill, for leading a spirited defense of the women of the District and the nation.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will meet with reporters today, Wednesday, July 18, 2012, outside 2141 Rayburn House Office Building following the markup of H.R. 3803, a bill banning all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy in the District of Columbia. The markup is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in 2141 Rayburn House Office Building, and H.R. 3803 is the third and final bill on the agenda.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who I know has been a student of history and of the Constitution, filed amendments in a committee last month that would have overturned D.C. laws. As a result, a bipartisan group of Senators withdrew their budget autonomy bill for the District of Columbia on the advice of city officials, including me. Senator Paul, without so much as a word with any representative of the city, sought to nullify D.C. laws affecting public safety, reproductive health, and workers' rights that local elected officials had enacted.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today sent a letter to officials at the Smithsonian, Clark Construction Group, LLC, Smoot Construction, and H.J. Russell & Company about reports and protests concerning a lack of District of Columbia residents and of African Americans working on the construction of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and asked that the museum and contractors meet with her.

"Vincent Gray is a friend of longstanding who I have always known to have high professional and ethical standards. However, the criminal conduct by his campaign aides revealed in court is deeply disturbing and goes to the heart of the democratic process. Mayor Gray has an obligation to clear this matter up quickly.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said she believes that Senate passage of her D.C. Courts and Public Defender Service Act is the boost she needs to get the House to pass this non-controversial but important piece of legislation quickly. Norton got the bill through the House in 2010 by voice vote, and she will seek its quick passage in the House.
