WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that Admiral Cecil D. Haney, a native Washingtonian and graduate of Eastern Senior High School and the U.S. Naval Academy, has been promoted to four-star admiral and has taken command of the Navy's Pacific Fleet, the world's largest fleet. The change of command ceremony took place Friday morning in Hawaii. Admiral Haney is only the second African-American Naval Officer to be promoted to four-star admiral, the highest non-wartime rank in the Navy. The first was also a District native and graduate of D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), who appears regularly with host Bonnie Erbé on the PBS news series "To The Contrary," will participate on the show to be aired this Sunday, January 22, 2012. This week's show will include a discussion onthe Pentagon's new efforts to curb sexual assault in the military, and a nationwide push for paid parental leave.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at the U.S. General Services Administration's (GSA) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. event, tomorrow, January 19, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the GSA's One Constitution Campus (1275 First Street, NE). Norton has chaired and is now the ranking member of the subcommittee with jurisdiction over GSA. The Congresswoman, who was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, will discuss how the King legacy relates to the work of public servants such as GSA employees.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at events across the District throughout the holiday weekend to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "On the first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday since the dedication of the MLK Memorial, it is gratifying to see that District residents are commemorating the day in the King tradition of service and attention to the poor," said Norton, who was a civil rights activist with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the movement led by Dr. King.
