WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today received a written response to a letter she sent yesterday to Supreme Court Marshal Gail A. Curley requesting immediate removal of the bike racks blocking the sidewalks around the Court grounds. In her response, Curley said that the bike racks on Constitution Avenue between Maryland Avenue and Second Street NE have been removed and that all other bike racks will be removed from the grounds this weekend.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced she will request that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigate the widespread problems with the new Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) online system and will introduce a bill to establish an inspector general for the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) filed an amendment to the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act at the Committee on Rules to give the District of Columbia the same number of service academy nominations and appointments as states. Currently, each member of the House and Senate is allocated five appointments to each of the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy, and is allowed to nominate 10 people for each appointment as it becomes vacant. However, because D.C. has no senators, the District is deprived of 10 appointments to each of these service academies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) introduced a bill yesterday to provide the District of Columbia Courts and the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia with the same authority that federal courts and federal agencies have to offer voluntary separation incentive payments, or buyouts, to their employees. Norton’s bill is part of her efforts to improve the operations of the parts of the local justice system in D.C. that are under federal control.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today thanked the 28 ideologically diverse national and local groups that sent a letter yesterday to House leadership calling for the House’s fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to give the District of Columbia mayor control over the D.C. National Guard. Norton, Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), and Congressman Anthony G. Brown (D-MD) filed an amendment to the fiscal year 2023 NDAA at the Committee on Rules that would give the mayor this authority. The committee determines which amendments will be allowed to be offered on the House floor to the bill. The committee is expected to vote on amendments next week.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security expressing concern with the racially disparate impact of the citizenship requirement in a program designed to help people fleeing the war in Ukraine resettle in the United States. Under the program, named Uniting for Ukraine, only Ukrainian citizens and their immediate family members are eligible. The letter, led by Norton, was signed by 24 House members.

The Committee on Appropriations will mark up the bill today.
