WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today vowed to defeat each amendment filed by Republicans at the Committee on Rules to the House’s fiscal year 2023 District of Columbia Appropriations bill that would prohibit D.C. from spending local funds on local policies. The committee, which determines which amendments can be offered on the floor, will consider amendments to the bill on Monday.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today testified at a Committee on Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands hearing on her bill, co-led by Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD), to remove the name of Francis G. Newlands, a former U.S. senator from Nevada who held racist views, from Chevy Chase Circle. The name appears on the fountain and a plaque in the circle, which is a federal park. The circle lies partly in the District of Columbia and partly in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District, which Raskin represents.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), and Congressman Anthony Brown (D-MD) announced that their District of Columbia National Guard Home Rule Act, which would give the D.C. mayor control over the D.C. National Guard (DCNG), passed the House yesterday as an amendment to the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Currently, the president controls the DCNG, while the governors of the states and territories control their National Guards. This is the second time in history either chamber of Congress has voted to give the mayor this authority. The House did so last year, too.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that the House today passed her amendment to the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act that would give the District of Columbia the same number of U.S. service academy nominations and appointments as states. Currently, each member of the House and Senate is allocated five appointments to each of the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy, and is allowed to nominate 10 people for each appointment as it becomes vacant. However, because D.C. has no senators, the District is deprived of 10 appointments to each of these service academies.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced she has filed two amendments at the House Rules Committee to the fiscal year 2023 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill to allow marijuana in public housing in jurisdictions where marijuana is already legal. One amendment would prohibit the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from using its funds to enforce the prohibition on marijuana in federally assisted housing in jurisdictions where recreational marijuana is legal. The other would prohibit HUD from using its funds to enforce the prohibition on medical marijuana in jurisdictions where medical marijuana is legal. The amendments are co-led by Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At today’s House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on abortion access, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) highlighted the unique risks faced by District of Columbia residents post-Roe. Because D.C. lacks the full rights and protections of statehood and is under Congress’ control, a future Republican Congress could ban all abortions in the District.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), and Congressman Anthony Brown (D-MD) announced that Committee on Rules yesterday made in order their amendment to the fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would give the District of Columbia mayor control over the D.C. National Guard. The committee determines which amendments will be allowed to be considered on the House floor, and because their amendment was made in order, it will be considered on the House floor this week.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced that the House’s fiscal year 2023 Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill includes her requested language directing the Federal Railroad Administration to continue working with the District of Columbia on the Union Station expansion project and to consider the feedback of all stakeholders, including residents of affected neighborhoods, in its planning process.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) yesterday wrote the Marshal of the Supreme Court requesting immediate removal of the bike racks blocking the sidewalks around the Supreme Court grounds. Because anti-climb fencing is already in place around the grounds, Norton said the bike racks serve no security purpose and force District of Columbia residents, workers and visitors to use the street, creating a safety hazard.
