WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today thanked Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, which oversees the U.S. Capitol grounds, for introducing a concurrent resolution to place D.C.'s Frederick Douglass statue in the Capitol. Senator Schumer introduced his resolution following the Senate Appropriations Committee's approval of the fiscal year 2013 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill, which also contained a provision allowing D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton announced today that she will speak at the unveiling and dedication ceremony of a plaque dedicated to the nine victims of the June 22, 2009 Metro red line accident on Friday, June 22, 2012, near the crash site, at the Langley Bridge (New Hampshire Ave. near 1st St. and Oglepthorpe St. NE) at 11:00 a.m. Norton will join D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, National Transportation Safety Board Chair Deborah Hersman, family members of the victims, and first responders for the ceremony.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said today she is pleased that the House Appropriations Committee followed its Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government in funding many of her top priorities in the fiscal year 2013 D.C. appropriations bill it approved today, especially the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) program for thousands of D.C. students in college or enrolling, the startup of development on the St. Elizabeths East Campus in Ward 8, and additional funds for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention efforts in the District.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said that she will attend the investiture ceremony for Rudolph Contreras today, June 20, 2012, at The United States Courthouse, 333 Constitution Ave. NW at 4:30 p.m., as he becomes a U.S. District Court judge for the District of Columbia. Norton recommended Contreras, only the second Latino to serve as a U.S. District Court judge here, to the President.

Norton will seek feedback from the Ward 1 Mt. Pleasant community on recent developments affecting the District in Congress.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said that her optimism has grown preventing future District of Columbia government shutdowns now that the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee has joined the call by the three other committees with jurisdiction over District to give the D.C. government the authority to remain open and spend its local funds in the event of a federal government shutdown.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced figures on D.C. residents employed at the St. Elizabeths Department of Homeland Security (DHS) headquarters construction project in Ward 8, and reported on her unannounced visit to the site Friday. The current construction on the Coast Guard headquarters there is winding down. According to the General Services Administration (GSA), of the two large contractors still working on the Ward 8 site, Clark Construction continues to employ D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that the fiscal year 2013 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill, which the Senate Appropriations Committee approved yesterday, includes major victories for the District of Columbia, including a provision that would prevent the city from shutting down if the federal government shuts down, and would allow D.C. to place its Frederick Douglass statue in the U.S. Capitol, a longstanding Norton priority. The bill also funds key Norton initiatives, including the D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said that the Senate Committee on Appropriations approved a fiscal year 2013 Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill with no anti-home-rule riders attached to the District of Columbia's local budget. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, led the committee to achieve today's results. Norton thanked Sen. Durbin and Sen. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will kick off the pre-launch of Lunchtime Music on the Mall tomorrow, June 14, 2012,at noon, near the Smithsonian Metro stop on the National Mall. Norton will introduce violinist and D.C. native Clarice Labbe, the first artist to perform as part of the series.
