WASHINGTON, D.C. – The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that the congresswoman will hold a virtual community meeting on whether the portion of Beach Drive that has been closed to vehicle traffic during the pandemic should remain closed permanently. Norton initially supported the closure, saying it has become apparent during the pandemic how important and healthy it is to be outdoors, but has since heard from many constituents would like the road reopened to cars. This meeting will provide a chance for both sides to speak and make their respective cases before a final decision is made.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In recognition of Flag Day today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) celebrated progress made in gaining the same respect for the District of Columbia flag that state flags receive. Since Flag Day 2020, the House has passed her D.C. statehood bill twice.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Chair of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, today highlighted provisions benefitting the District of Columbia she got included in the INVEST in America Act, which the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure passed last week. “The INVEST in America Act is an unprecedented investment in our infrastructure, providing a 54 percent increase over the current level,” Norton said. “The bill reauthorizes for another 10 years special federal funding Metro receives for capital improvements and, importantly, increases the authorized funding level each year until it reaches $200 million.” Metro has been receiving $150 million per year.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate today confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, whom Norton recommended to President Obama for the district court, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said she was disappointed Senate Republicans yesterday successfully filibustered the motion to proceed to the House-passed Paycheck Fairness Act, preventing the Senate from debating and voting on the legislation. Norton’s Pay Equity for All Act, which would bar employers from asking job applicants for their salary history, is included in the Paycheck Fairness Act.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and her Service Academy Selection Board held a celebration for the eleven students from the District of Columbia who accepted appointments to the United States service academies. Every year, Norton’s Service Academy Selection Board nominates D.C. high school seniors to the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The service academies select the best of her nominees for appointments.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), after the release today of a Senate report on the attack on the U.S. Capitol, once again called on Congress to pass her District of Columbia National Guard Home Rule Act, which would give the D.C. mayor control over the D.C. National Guard. Norton also said she was pleased that the report did not recommend permanent fencing at the Capitol complex. Norton’s No Fencing at the United States Capitol Complex Act would prohibit the use of federal funds to install permanent fencing at the Capitol complex.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today, during Pride Month, reintroduced the District of Columbia Local Juror Non-Discrimination Act of 2021. The bill would clarify that D.C. residents may not be excluded or disqualified from jury service in D.C. Superior Court based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Specifically, the bill would clarify that “sex,” which is a protected class under the non-discrimination law that applies to jurors in D.C. Superior Court, includes sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will mark up the bill on June 9, 2021.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced the process for entities in the District of Columbia to apply to her office for fiscal year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act community project funding, formerly known as earmarks. The rules established by the House Armed Services Committee limit projects to defense research, development, test, and evaluation and military construction. Under the committee’s rules, for-profit entities are not eligible.
