WASHINGTON, DC – The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced the kick-off for an expanded Lunchtime Music on the Mall on Tuesday, May 28 and Thursday, May 30, 2013, at 12:00 p.m., on the National Mall, on 7th St. between Madison Dr. and Jefferson Dr., SW. A performance by D.C. area singer/songwriter Nila Kay who recently released her debut album, Serial Love, will begin at noon on Tuesday with an intermission at 12:30 p.m., when Norton, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), D.C.

Home Rule press conference with District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray and national groups whose issues have been attacked in the past by using the District of Columbia as a vehicle will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in 2168 Rayburn House Office Building.

WASHINGTON, DC – A day after Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) sent a letter to appropriators outlining the potential hazards of sequester-induced furloughs on public safety in the nation's capital, the National Park Service (NPS) announced that furloughs for Park Police will end effective June 1.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today sent a letter to House and Senate appropriators to inform them of her findings from recent meetings with Capitol Police, U.S. Park Police, and Federal Protective Service (FPS) officials regarding concerns that sequestration cuts to federal police could jeopardize public safety in the nation's capital in light of new risks raised by the Boston Marathon bombings.

WASHINGTON, DC – The House today passed a resolution (S.Con.Res.16) authorizing the use of Emancipation Hall next month, Wednesday, June 19, 2013, to unveil the District of Columbia's Frederick Douglass statue. The resolution, which passed the Senate last week, was approved in the House by a voice vote and does not need to be signed into law to take effect, marking the final step in the long-fought effort of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) to allow the District, like the states, to have its own statue in the Capitol.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will ask members of Congress to sign onto a letter to President Obama at a hearing today, held by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), at 3:00 p.m. in 340 Cannon House Office Building, on the low wages paid by federal government contractors that result in millions of workers who are barely able to support themselves and whose low wages undermine the nation's economic prosperity.

When the White House released the administration's emails on Benghazi last week, they snatched what was left of headlines for Benghazi. Republicans are still looking, though, and they have put out a call for whistleblowers. Meanwhile, Republicans are trying to tar anyone they can find. Democrats have asked that former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Thomas Pickering, who with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, appointed by President George W. Bush, led the independent Accountability Review Board investigation of Benghazi, be called to testify.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak on the House floor tomorrow, Tuesday, May 21, 2013, during consideration of a resolution (S.Con.Res.16) authorizing the use of Emancipation Hall on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, to unveil the District of Columbia's Frederick Douglass statue. The House will take up the resolution, passed last week by the Senate, tomorrow mid-to-late afternoon under suspension of the rules.

I went to New York this week to accept a "Gloria Award" from Gloria Steinem, Letty Pogrebin and Pat Carbine, the founding mothers of the Ms. Foundation, as I serve in the Republican-led House, which couldn't less about women's concerns. This is all the more reason to be grateful to the Ms. Foundation for its determined focus on today's women.
