WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today participated in a Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Water Resources and the Environment hearing on proposals for the Water Resources Development Act of 2022. Among other items, Norton has requested that the bill require studies on a secondary drinking water source for the District of Columbia and flood mitigation in Federal Triangle in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today reintroduced her Universal Prekindergarten and Early Childhood Education Act, which would provide federal funds to encourage states to provide universal prekindergarten to every child, regardless of income. The bill would afford the benefits of early childhood education to all families, many of which are currently not able to afford it.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, on Equal Pay Day, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), the first woman to chair the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, highlighted the three bills she has introduced this Congress to help close the pay gap for women and minorities. Equal Pay Day marks the number of additional days women must work to earn what men earned the prior year. Norton’s Pay Equity for All Act, which passed the House last year, prohibits employers from asking job applicants for their salary history before making a job or salary offer. Norton’s Fair Pay Act would require that if men and women are doing comparable work, they must be paid comparable wages. Norton’s Salary Transparency Act would require employers to provide the salary range for jobs in advertisements and interviews and to existing employees.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced the process for entities in the District of Columbia to apply to her office for fiscal year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act community project funding, formerly known as earmarks. The rules established by the House Armed Services Committee limit projects to defense research, development, test, and evaluation and military construction. Under the committee’s rules, for-profit entities are not eligible.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said the District of Columbia was shortchanged an estimated $90 million to $200 million in earmarks in the fiscal year (FY) 2022 omnibus appropriations bill, which the president will sign this week. D.C. did not receive the same amount of funding for earmarks as states because D.C. does not have senators to request earmarks for D.C. The FY 2022 omnibus appropriations bill was the first appropriations bill in more than a decade that included earmarks, or funding requested by members of Congress for governments or non-profits in their districts or states for specific projects. Each member of the House and each senator who requested funding for eligible earmarks received some or all of the funding they requested.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today renewed her call for Congress to pass her District of Columbia Courts Vacancy Reduction Act, which would allow judicial appointments to the local District of Columbia courts to take effect after a 30-day congressional review period, unless a joint resolution disapproving an appointment is enacted into law during that period. By the end of March, there will be at least 13 judicial vacancies on the local D.C. courts, despite the Senate recently confirming seven local D.C. court nominees.
