WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) introduced a bill today to require the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to provide information to the District of Columbia government on individuals convicted of D.C. Code felonies to help ensure that D.C. has services ready for these individuals when they return home from BOP. This bill is necessary because BOP houses D.C. residents convicted of D.C. Code felonies, and BOP contends that federal privacy laws prohibit it from sharing information on such individuals with D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a member of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, today participated in a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy provided details concerning civilian casualties, including the bombing of two kindergartens, and the targeting of three nuclear power plants. Drawing upon the shared values of democracy, Zelenskyy thanked the United States for imposing powerful sanctions on Russia, and reiterated his call for a no-fly zone over Ukraine or for the delivery of fighter jets. Zelenskyy said Ukraine wants peace, and is fighting for its sovereignty, not against Russia.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — At a Committee on Oversight and Reform (COR) hearing on Tuesday, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) highlighted how her District of Columbia priorities were included in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARP). The hearing examined the impact of ARP’s fiscal relief for states and localities. ARP retroactively provided D.C. the $755 million it was denied when the CARES Act treated D.C. as a territory instead of a state for fiscal relief, and ARP treated D.C. as a state, county and city for new fiscal relief, since D.C. provides each level of service.

Statehood, the executive director of Students United for D.C. Statehood, the chair of Howard University’s Political Science Department, and two Howard University seniors. Members of Congress typically bring a guest from their districts to attend the State of the Union address to highlight an important issue. Due to COVID, members are not allowed to bring a guest this year, so Norton chose to invite several virtual guests who are advocates for D.C. statehood.
