WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Trent Franks (R-AZ), who chairs the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution, indicated to the press yesterday that he will re-introduce his bill that would ban all abortions in the District of Columbia after 20 weeks, with limited exceptions. Last Congress, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), her pro-choice congressional allies, and a coalition of 100 national and local organizations defeated the bill in a vote on the House floor.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), at a House hearing today on the effects of sequestration, said that following yesterday's tragedy in Boston, the U.S. Park Police, the Federal Protective Service and other federal police have been put in the agonizing position of protecting visitors and residents in the nation's capital while maintaining an open, free-flowing city at the height of the tourist season despite the across-the-board sequester cuts to police services.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), a regular guest on PBS's "To The Contrary," will appear on the show at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 14. The show will also air at various times nationally throughout the week. Norton will debate whether a very radical version of feminist activism is hurting or helping Muslim women, the passing of the controversial Margaret Thatcher, and a new program from the organization Count Me In to help female veterans and military spouses achieve economic independence.

WASHINGTON, DC – The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today that President Obama's fiscal year 2014 budget includes, at Norton's request, a legislative provision that would give the District of Columbia budget autonomy, or the permanent authority to spend its local funds without congressional approval and to set its own fiscal year. While President Obama has included narrative statements in his prior budgets supporting budget autonomy, as did President George W. Bush, no president had ever included a budget autonomy legislative provision in his budget.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) this evening will play the role of Rosa Parks in "Let Freedom Ring," a play about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, at the Howard University School of Law Moot Court Room (2900 Van Ness St. NW), from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. The play, featuring a cast of notable local judges and politicians, was written by Paul Handy, Administrative Law Judge for the D.C. Office of Administrative Hearings, and is presented by District 4 of the National Association of Women Judges.
